Lets get started!
1) Be flexible with travel dates
Now this may seem like an obvious tip, but it's surprising how much you can save just by changing the date. By simply changing your fly out date to mid week instead of peak times of friday and sunday you can save hundreds. Often airlines have trouble filling mid week flights. So they drop the prices drastically in order to entice customers. If you are flexible it may definitely be worth flying out a few days earlier.
2) Use an incognito browser
Ever find the perfect price online only to return hours later and see it has increased drastically? Then you're not alone. Many travel companies use google to monitor their visitors and raise the prices when they return. By simply using a private browser this can help put a stop to this price hike.
3) Travel off season
Although yet again this is an obvious one it will not only save you money on airfares, but on accommodation to. If you don't have a specific location in mind. Then remember it is always off season somewhere in the world. So why not push your boundaries and explore somewhere new.
4) Buy packages
If you are not planning on doing a lot of traveling then purchasing a package can be a great choice. Many times if you book accommodation and flights together you can save A LOT of money. My favourite site to book packages through is WOTIF .
They have some amazing package deals which you can save up to 50% off flights, I highly recommend you check them out if you haven't yet.
5) Fly in Direct
By simply adding a stop over you could potentially save hundreds of dollars. Although it may add a little bit of extra total flight time it is well worth the compromise if you are on a budget. Also it's just another excuse to explore a whole new airport you may have never been to before.
6) Know when to book
Highly debated within the travel industry is when the best time to book flights is. Some say the earlier the better while others prefer to get those last minute deals which can be good to. However I would recommend booking around 6-8 weeks in advance. As these times usually have the best deals.
7) Price match policies
Now this is completely dependent on the airline but some offer price match policies. Have you ever thought you had a great deal only to book and find it even cheaper later on? Some airlines will re reimburse you with gift vouchers for the difference in price. Although it won't save you cash it is useful to use these vouchers on your next flights to get great discounts!
8) Altering your location
Often flights will be a lot cheaper if you book them from a different country. To do this you simply need to visit the airlines website that is specific to a lower socio - economic county. Say you want to book tickets from Cape town to Johannesburg simply visit the site ending in .za instead of .com. Or if you have some technical know how simply install a vpn and change your location to different countries and watch those ticket prices drop!
9) Signup to alerts
You can save hundreds by simply signing up to alerts such as iknowthepilot.com.au Companies such as these specialize in locating all the best deals for the times you're flying. Simply plug in your travel dates and location and you will be notified whenever there is a new cheaper flight available.
10) Alter your airport
The most simple trick of this whole article is to simply alter the airport you fly into. Instead of flying into the major airport at your destination, try flying into a smaller airport. Not only will you save lots on your airfares, but you will also not get stuck in those long waits at customs.
